Current Research Areas
This research aims to investigate novel model-based approaches to the design, development, and implementation of production and process controls for advanced manufacturing systems.
Tools & Methods: STEP-NC, IDEF0, SysML, UML, XMI, CLI toolpaths
This research involves the development of approaches and methods to improve the qualification of metal additive manufacturing technologies for critical industries such as aerospace, nuclear, and medical.
Tools & Methods: SAE and ASTM Specifications and Test Methods, SysML, Simufact Additive, Ansys Mechanical
This research investigates industry-mandated cybersecurity and risk management frameworks and requirements and their compliance for advanced manufacturing systems. Reference models are developed to improve the implementation efficiency and effectiveness of these requirements.
Tools & Methods: NIST Risk Management Framework SP 800-37 Rev. 2, NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0, SysML, UAF, RAAML, ISO 31000
Standards Development & Professional Societies
I have been actively involved in developing and balloting international standards related to the industrialisation of advanced manufacturing technologies since 2019. I am developing standards for ISO and ASTM International and am an active liaison for SAE International standards as part of the AMS-AM metals committee. I am the South African representative within the ISO/TC 184 committee for automation systems and integration and am part of the ISO/TC 261 for Additive Manufacturing.
Standards Development Involvement
ISO: ISO/ASTM CD 52951, ISO 10303-238 Edition 4 (STEP-NC Standard for Powder Bed Fusion toolpath control. I liaise for Composites and Drill and Fill technologies).
ASTM International: ASTM WK78322
SAE International: AMS7003, AMS7032, ARP7065, ARP7068.
Professional Societies
Active: SAE International, ASM International, INCOSE, SAIIE.
Lapsed: ASTM International, AeSSA.
Industry Projects
I was a lead for a 2023 industry-academia project that conducted research titled "Design Specification & Qualification of Metal Additive Manufactured Aerospace Parts" to develop industrial guidance and best practices for aerospace additive manufacturing. This industrial project was administered by the Aerospace Industry Support Initiative (AISI) and the South African CSIR, and funded by local aerospace industrial partners and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC).
